Åland Islands - Major Projects

Name Year Notes
Åland Railway Project 2052 -----
Archipelago Sea International Bridge (Beginning of Construction) 2067 The Archipelago International Sea Bridge is a series of bridges built over the Archipelago Sea, connecting the Åland Islands to Satakunta. At 41km on the west side, the western terminal of the highway is the city of Gunnarsten, Åland Islands and the eastern terminal is Söderlandet, Satakunta. At this point, there is a monument to the 16 Satakuntish and Ålandic men who lost their lives in the construction of the bridge. Here is also the border between Satakunta and Åland Islands.

The bridge is 109km in total, 41km on the west side (Ålandic side) and 68km on the east side (Satakuntish side). This number includes the series of bridges and stretches on land built to connect the various bridges, totaling 12 bridges (the largest bridge is the Gunnarsten - Seglinge stretch with 15.5 km)

Archipelago Sea International Bridge (Openning) 2071 The construction of the bridge began in April 2067. The bridge opened to traffic on 27th March 2071, right on the 30th anniversary of the independence of the Åland Islands, country that announced and planned the project, but paid for by the Åland Islands government, the Satakunta government and with EU funds.
Mariehamn International Airport Expansion Project 2084 -----
Åland Islands High Speed Rail (AHS) 2090 The Ålands järnvägar (AJ) (in english, Railways of Aland) started building high-speed rail lines in 2088. AJ has branded its high-speed service as Ålands höghastighetståg (AHS) which currently operates one line: the Mariehamn-Turku high-speed railway. The AHS is the only high-speed rail service in Åland Islands, with trains operating at speeds of up to 200 km/h or 300 km/h. The country's only high-speed line crosses the famous "Archipelago International Sea Bridge", opened in 2071 and recently upgraded to receive the high-speed rail service.
